Not sure what a doula is?  Need guidance on how to incorporate a doula into your birth plan?

I teach this fun class free of charge at Whole foods (Washtenaw Ave., Ann Arbor).  Lectures run 7-8:15 pm. The 2013 lecture series is as follows: June 28th and September 13th.  Only 2 this year.  Check back for details about future classes, sometimes I teach outside of this schedule at different locations that may suit you better.

The community has spoken…..

“Dawn, I feel empowered to give birth and I’m not even pregnant!  What you are doing is critical, powerful, and inspiring! Shine on!”

“Great lecture with a great blend of information and examples. Thanks!”

“So glad you represent the doula community and provide the liberating and enlightening birth and pregnancy info. Thanks so much!”

“Doula Dawn provides invaluable information about how to set yourself up for the best birth experience possible!  Thank you!”

When I started my practice, I found that approximately 75% of people–men, women, and even women of childbearing age–in “progressive” Ann Arbor, had never heard of a doula.  This was the impetus behind my community education efforts–I saw a gap and have begun to fill it.  I am committed to educating the public, and am excited to be teaching around greater Ann Arbor.  I have taught at University of Michigan (Dearborn), Eastern Michigan University, Whole Foods, Women Business Owners of SE MI, Business Networking International, and My Urban Toddler.

This class is designed to teach expecting parents and the public about an amazing, gentle birthing option.  Together, we explore the history of the doula, her role, the numerous obstetrical and long-term benefits, and the importance of emotional support and advocacy.  We watch a short video where I explain one law that every laboring woman must know.  I demonstrate some “non-magical” physical comfort techniques used during labor.  Lastly, we have a fruitful discussion about the ideal role of the father at birth including doulas and dad’s compatibility and how doulas ENHANCE, not diminish dad’s support.  (Dads are often very relieved when a doula is along for their journey.)

I would be happy to talk to you about future educational opportunities in your classroom or at your community event. I invite big and small inquires via my contact page.  Private in-home classes are $40.  How will you empower your birth?
